Janina Opale Whitening Toothpaste and Opale Liquid Toothpaste Spray
Over the past few years almost all the toothpaste manufacturers have developed tooth whitening dentifrices, with at least four appearing on the market last year alone.

Two of these products come from a new company, Janina International, set up to develop and manufacture in the UK a range of innovative oral health care products. The ‘ultimate oral care programme’ is claimed to prevent caries, control plaque and tartar, help sensitive teeth, give lasting gum protection, freshen breath and whiten teeth safely, and has a string of trials to its name (see also Dentistry Monthly, June 1996: 100-102).

Janina Ultrawhite toothpaste contains not only most of the active ingredients found individually in other good oral hygiene products but also the new patented Bromaine Complex. This ingredient contains the naturally occurring proteolytic enzymes bromain and papain which can prevent and remove stains. They have the additional clinical property to remove the proteinoceous pellicle layer and slow down the build-up of plaque.

The Bromaine Complex delivers oxygen radicals which have a proven antibacterial effect against Gram negative anaerobic microorganisms. It also consumes the compounds which cause halitosis. The Janina Oralfresh Spray also contains Bromaine Complex and can be used at frequent intervals to protect against halitosis and stimulate the production of saliva.

What the panel thought.

Presentation: Excellent. Comments included: professional, classy and innovative.

Instructions for use: Very clear for both the toothpaste and the spray.

First impressions: Small, neat and ‘handbag sized’. There was no tamper-proof seal on the containers.

Handling: Two panel members had difficulties with the pump dispenser, one of which kept getting stuck. One user found the spray went ‘on to the lips if not careful’.

Taste: All panel members liked the taste, although one reported a burning sensation afterwards. One thought the strong taste did not affect the tastebuds like chlorhexidine.

Ability to refresh: All members gave this an excellent rating. One would recommend the spray after coffee breaks. They all felt the freshening effect was long lasting.

Overall rating: The ‘total toothpaste’ concept is excellent - adding the spray to the system is ‘a stroke of genius’, wrote one user. Another said: ‘I would buy and use the product myself; it is so neat and easy to carry around. Good taste, great results.’

Verdict: An excellent product that panel members would stock in the practice and recommend to their patients.

NOTE: Janina Ultrawhite has since changed it’s name to Janina Opale Whitening Toothpaste.
