Whiteout - Whitening pastes put to the test

Janina Opale Paste
Contains 14 active ingredients selected to provide complete oral protection, targeting bacteria that cause staining, plaque, tartar, gum disease and bad breath. Our tester said: “It was brilliant! My teeth feel really clean all day after using the paste and definitely whiter. But I found it rather strong at first with a burning sensation on my gums. Also, I like to rinse after brushing, but Janina recommends you just spit it out. It’s more than I would normally pay for toothpaste, but will continue to use it every other day to make it last longer.”

It has the same ingredients as the paste but in a spray format that claims to whiten and clean teeth and gums without brushing. Our tester said: “What a great idea when you’re on the move! I used it when I went to stay with a friend overnight and found my teeth felt as clean as if I’d brushed them. It’s also a great breath freshener you can use anytime.”

Macleans Whitening
Contains Triclene, SmithKline Beecham’s trademark ingredient, which helps to restore the natural whiteness of the teeth by breaking up the stains. These are then gently removed by regular brushing. It is the first and only whitening toothpaste to be accredited by the British Dental Association in recognition of its dental health benefit and its demonstrable whitening effect. Our tester said: “It had a nice taste but felt a bit gritty in the mouth, I’m not sure my teeth looked any whiter but they did feel smooth and clean.”

Aquafresh Whitening
Also contains Triclene. A comparison of Macleans Whitening and Aquafresh Whitening shows them to have identical formulations. Our tester said: “I usually use Aquafesh but I felt the whitening toothpaste gave me a bit more. My teeth feel very smooth and clean but I can’t say they look any whiter.”
